Keeping a cluttered Desktop can be overwhelming and can also slow down your PC. These programs will show you how to keep yourself more organised on your computer.
In this particular article I am not going to explain how to speed up your PC or how to keep yourself organised on the PC, but showcase to a list of programs that can help do so.
First lets note that I'm running a Windows 7 64-bit operating system, so I apologize for any inconvenience you may have due to compatibility. I will provide links to the download destinations for each of the programs below each one.

1. Rocketdock
Rocketdock is a very popular program and gives your Windows system a more Mac-feel. It's basically a dock (like the feature Apple has integrated with Macs) however has an extreme customization system and you can pretty much set this to look how you'd like. You can download several icons online to replace your default icons, including Adobe products, Microsoft software along with built-in Windows programs such as Notepad or Recycle Bin.
I really recommend you download this as it can be very useful, being able to launch several icons one click away from the Desktop, it can also clean up the icons on your Desktop - as you can simply add the icons to your dock and delete the additional shortcuts. As you can see I have a Mac-style themed dock with similar style icons.
Overall, on the simplicity of the program yet the advanced customization feature, I would give this a 8/10.
Click the button below the image to download Rocketdock.

2. Rainmeter
This is one of my all-time favorite Windows customization tools... The fact that something sized around 1.5 megabytes can actually change your Desktop into something epic. Rainmeter is a Desktop customization tool which allows you to customize every aspect of your Desktop along with some fun little widgets. You can download user-created skins for a variety of widgets including clocks, calenders... Pretty much anything you can think of in that area.
I have a couple on my Desktop, screen printed below however that is nothing to the amount of customization you can enforce on your Desktop. Click the button below the screen print to get started with Rainmeter.
With the epic customization on this bad boy software - I'm going to rate it a 9/10.

3. CubeDesktop
CubeDesktop is a beautiful piece of software, with the ability to simulate a cube of six Desktops all from your Desktop. You can manage through six of these Desktops, having a different wallpaper on each, having different applications open on each - whatever you want, you can now do it with this software.
But the fact that you can manage these six other Desktops isn't even part of the amazing design of this product - Press the F11 key and spin the 3D cube with your cursor. There's many many other features for you to check out with this software, but I'll leave that to you.
Please note this program does cost a fee however you can download a free trial. Support the developers by purchasing your license today. Due to the amazing simulation and the ability to manage six Desktops, this deserves a 8/10.

4. Desktop Icon Toy
This is a fun piece of software that organizes your Desktop icons in a fun way. Watch your icons fly into different shapes and patterns, including spirals, stars and triangles - It's really worth checking out and there is a free 32-bit & 64-bit version too.
It's not the worst thing in the world saving shortcuts to your Desktop, a reasonable amount is actually better that none at all... However we tend to get in the habit of dropping random files, whether they're downloaded or just files you need to access at that time... The Desktop often gets very cluttered. That's why iDeskSoft have developed this software - to give the icon arrangement a nicer look.
Another cool feature of this software, is that the icons do a little 'wiggle' when you move the cursor over them.. It's no biggie but I thought it looked kind of cool...
My favorite has to be the 'Clock' layout, in which the icons move as time goes by... This is all good except it uses only a limited amount of icons, which means the rest are displayed at the top of your screen. Still looks great and I would definitely recommend it.
Not extremely useful, yet very fun and can possibly make you more organised on your Desktop... 7/10.

5. ObjectDock
An alternative to RocketDock, ObjectDock is a simple, clean and elegant dock built especially for your Windows system. It's not as customizable as RocketDock, yet it does have its features and was developed by Stardock. With it's clean style this looks nice in front on nearly any wallpaper you have set on your Desktop.
What's great about this program is that its supports Windows 8 and has many features which you can check out on the developers website (button below) - These include animated effects for your dock, hide and show the dock and position the dock anywhere on your screen. Of course Rocketdock offers most of the same features, if not all... But it's a matter of opinion and completely your choice on which one you go for, personally I recommend both as they do a brilliant job.
Another cool feature is that on default, you get an icon just for your Start Menu... Which means when clicked it triggers the Start Menu to pop up. This is really useful for people who want a clean Desktop with no Taskbar.
Overall it's an alternative to Rocketdock yet I don't think it has as much of a customization system in which I give this a score of 7/10.

6. Bump Top
BumpTop allows you to customize your Windows Desktop in a 3D way... This awesome software converts your regular Desktop into a visual 3D environment for you chuck your icons around and even hang your pictures on the walls...
But BumpTop is a lot more than just that, what I thought was incredible was that fact that files and folders have a virtual weight based on the amount of memory they take up and importance to you... I just thought this was a really cool feature integrated in the software.
Download this software by visiting the link below the image. Even though this program is quite futuristic and cheesy, it is a really cool program and would recommend to anyone who wants to try it for fun. You get a free 14-day trial. I rate this one a 8.5/10.

7. Launchy
Launchy is a free cross-platform application that dedicates itself to launching other applications from your computer from the click of a button. Simply type the program you want to open, and Launchy will launch it for you! This is useful again to people who don't want the Start Menu showing on their Desktop, and don't want to download a dock application.
On the developer's website you can also download additional skins to customize your Launchy to your liking. This is a very nice feature and I expect users will keep creating skins so long as the application stays running.
However I've had this on my Desktop for a while now with both a dock and my Start Menu - it looks nice on your Desktop and is a really useful utility - I definitely recommend you download this one. 8/10.

8. Circle Dock
A different design to the previous docks, this one is completely unique. Circle Dock is a dock which allows you to launch your programs and applications from a circular dock, re-size and change appearance settings of the dock to meet your standards and rotate the dock using your mouse wheel. It's a different approach compared to the other docks however it is fairly customizable and a great last touch to your Desktop.
You can easily change the location of the dock by dragging and dropping. Another cool feature is the button in the center of the dock which triggers the start menu - very useful.
The dock also has a lot more features including;
