5 Useful & Fun Tricks You Can Do With Notepad
Notepad is one of the most used word processors due to its simplicity and being built in with Windows. It is used for many tasks including word processing, text editing and web programming. However you can also use it to some very random, yet partly useful tricks. Here's how.
Please Note: I am running a Windows 7 operating system, however these should work throughout most Windows operating systems, ensuring you have Notepad. Some of these tricks also require you to save the document in a specific format such as .vbs - I will list this below each trick, along with the code and a screenshot.
These tricks are 100% safe and will not harm your computer in any way. You won't need to download any additional software, you will just have to use the built-in program Notepad.

1. Annoying Messages
This can be a fun little prank to pull on your friends. It involves creating a .vbs file which once opened, can generate as many message boxes as you wish. You can also change the text of the message box! Start by opening Notepad and copy and paste the code below;
WScript.Echo ("First Message Here")
WScript.Echo ("Second Message Here")
WScript.Echo ("Third Message Here")
WScript.Echo ("Fourth Message Here")
WScript.Echo ("Fifth Message Here")
WScript.Echo ("Sixth Message Here")
Of course replace the "First Message Here" quotes with your own text. You can of course add as many lines as you want which could turn to a very annoying application.
Save as:
- Anything.vbs
2. Make Your PC Faster
Yes, that's right! You can make your PC a bit quicker with Notepad. All you have to do is simply copy the code, just like before, and paste it in Notepad. Then save it as a .vbe file this time, and simply open the program.
More in detail...
Basically, this is a small program that makes a large request for 'Contiguous Memory' and then instantly releases it. Windows will need to do some 'house cleaning' to do so thus cleaning up your memory and making the PC performance better.

You don't need to change anything in this one, just make sure you save it as the right format (seen below) and you're done!
Save as:
- Anything.vbe
3. Open Your CD Drive
If you're a... 'lazy individual' and would like a program to open your CD drive without even having to move, then today you can create one! Same method as above, copy and paste the code in Notepad and your CD drive will open! Try it yourself.
Set oWMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.OCX.7")
Set colCDROMs = oWMP.cdromCollection
if colCDROMs.Count = 1 then
for i = 0 to colCDROMS.Count - 1
colCDROMs.Item(i).Eject
colCDROMs.Item(i).Eject
Next ' cdrom
end if
Again, you don't have to change anything. Just stick to the right format.

4. Matrix-Style Falling Text
Next one on the list is a little more futuristic... Create your very own Matrix simulating program to amaze your friends! Simply copy and paste the following code, in of course Notepad and watch the magic happen!
@echo off
:loop
Color 0A
Title Matrix Simulation
echo 0 A 0 1 1 1 A 0 1 0 1 0 7 7 8 9 9 1 0 1 0 1 A 1 0 a d d f f 1 0 8
echo 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 A 0 A 1 0 A 1 1 1 1 0 A 1 0 A 5 5 6 7 a n k k k
echo 0 1 0 1 0 A B J 0 3 4 0 1 0 1 0 1 B A A O i d d 3 3 4 4 6 7 7 g u
echo 0 2 3 1 1 1 5 5 6 5 6 8 9 5 4 5 4 5 5 4 5 5 6 4 f f f g j d g d f g d
echo 2 4 5 6 5 5 6 5 9 4 5 7 7 7 7 8 9 9 0 66 6 1 5 5 6 4 5 5 8 6 4 4 6 4
goto :loop
This one is my favorite and you can find more advanced ones on YouTube! This time we are saving as a .bat file (see below) - This means it is a batch file (Command Prompt file).
Save as:
- Anything.bat
5. Create a Chat Box
Obviously this isn't a live chat box where you can chat to people across the world. It is a simple scripted chat with a couple buttons and a text box, but is pretty fun and can kill your boredom. Seeing as you can do this through Notepad it is worth checking out.
dim fname
fname=inputbox("Hello")
fname=inputbox("How Are You?")
fname=inputbox("That's Great!")
fname=inputbox("Goodbye.")
You can change the text placed between quotation marks to your choice. You can actually create a funny chat! Copy and paste this code into Notepad just like the others, and save it as the format seen below.
Save as:
- Anything.vbs
So there's some great tricks you can do with just Notepad. I will eventually get round to more Visual Basic and Batch programming tutorials, but until then stay updated and take it steady. Be sure to share with your friends - Thanks!
